State Earthquake Drill This Wednesday
COLUMBIA, S.C. (Monday, , 2008, 10:00 a.m.) – The South Carolina Earthquake Awareness Drill will be conducted this Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. State Superintendent of Education Jim Rex is encouraging schools statewide to participate in the drill. In addition, many nursing homes, hospitals, county and municipal agencies, and amateur radio operators also are expected to participate. The drill tests the information-dissemination system for earthquake warnings, and it gives participants the opportunity to test their safety plans.
South Carolina Earthquake Awareness Week for 2008 is being observed this week, November 9-15. The South Carolina Emergency Management Division (SCEMD) co-sponsors this week with the , the South Carolina Earthquake Education Program and the National Weather Service to remind everyone that an earthquake could potentially be a serious threat to our state.
SCEMD is encouraging everyone to review their and supply kits during this week to prepare not only for an earthquake, but to also be ready for the many other emergencies our state could face.
