MCG Student Struck And Killed On 15th Street

MCG/WNRRWNRRWNRRWNRRWNRRWNRR Augusta – 15th Street and Laney Walker is back open today following a fatal accident. One person was struck and killed by a City of Augusta bus while crossing the street, this according to city sources. It happened around 8:30 Monday morning, at the peak of rush-hour traffic.

MCG released the following statement Monday afternoon:

Ji Cheng (pronounced Gee Chang), 29, a first-year graduate student at the Medical College of Georgia, died shortly before 8:30 a.m. Monday morning when she was hit by a bus on 15th Street while in the crosswalk at the intersection of 15th Street and Laney-Walker Boulevard.

Dr. Cheng, a clinical medicine graduate of Sun-yat Sen University in Guangzhou , China , was studying biomedical science in the School of Graduate Studies . She recently married Chaohui Wu, also of China , and moved to Residence 6 on 15th Street in preparation for her husband coming to join her, according to Gretchen B. Caughman, dean of the MCG School of Graduate Studies.

“Ji was a wonderful, sweet person; bright, energetic, everything you look for in a student and a future scientist,” Dr. Caughman said. “She had a terrific career ahead of her.”

“There simply are no words to describe such a tragedy,” said Dr. Daniel W. Rahn, MCG president. “We grieve for her family, her friends, her classmates and teachers. We all grieve for the loss of such a young life.”

Richmond County Sheriff’s Office and the Richmond County Coroner’s Office are handling the investigation. “
